News Desk

The Ministry of Food has taken an initiative to import two lakh metric tonnes of rice more from Thailand and Vietnam on an emergency basis to ensure food security. The total cost for this import will be 962 crore 48 lakh taka.
Of this, Tk 705.96 crore will be spent on the purchase of 1.50 lakh metric tonnes of non-basmati boiled rice from Thailand. Remaining 50,000 tonnes of non-boiled rice will be imported from Vietnam with a cost Tk 256.52 crore.
To ensure food security and to encourage farmers, the government buys rice every Boro and Aman season. But in the last Boro 2020 season, only 54.49 percent of the collection target has been achieved.
On the other hand, only 70,210 metric tonnes of rice and 11,898 metric tonnes of paddy have been collected till March3, 2021 against the target of 2.07 lakh metric tonnes of paddy and 6.50 lakh metric tonnes of rice in the current Aman procurement season.
