Habiganj Correspondent

Habiganj’s Khowai river embankment has been breached and 6 more villages have been inundated. The incident took place at around 5 pm on Saturday (June 18) at Gopalpur in Lokra union of Sadar upazila.

The newly flooded villages are Jadavpur, Gopalpur, Goal Nagar, Muturanagar, Joynagar and a few more. Sadman Das, a local youth, said that the Khowai River dam burst in the afternoon and flooded the houses of people in several nearby villages. The speed of river water has decreased a lot. We think the city is relatively safe.

Earlier, due to continuous rains, floods have occurred in Sylhet-Sunamganj as well as Ajmiriganj and Nabiganj in Habiganj due to continuous downpour from India. As a result, several villages in the lower region are constantly being flooded.

So far, thousands of families in about 70 villages have been flooded. Flood victims are being taken to shelters. Meanwhile, the district administration is distributing food aid to the flood victims.

Last Friday afternoon, the Kushiyara river flooded and the dam sank, flooding the haor and flooding the villages in the area. The Ajmeriganj-Paharpur and Ajmeriganj-Kakailcheo roads were also submerged. As a result, communication between the people of some unions of Ajmiriganj upazila was cut off.

Due to the rains since Friday night, the river water continues to rise. On Saturday morning, the embankment of Kushiyara river broke at Nikhli Dhala of Paharpur-Markuli road and Kaiyar dhala of Firozpur-Badalpur road. As a result, one village after another started flooding the locality with great speed.

At least 200 families in Adarshnagar, Joynagar and Sharifnagar areas inside Ajmeriganj municipality were flooded. Besides, hundreds of families were stranded in Ferozepur, Paharpur, Kakailcheo Union and several villages in Markuli area.

For the waterlogged people, 40,000 packets of dry food have already been prepared by the district administration, 5,000 packets have been sent to Sunamganj and Sylhet, of which 5,000 more will be sent to Sylhet.

The remaining 30,000 packets of food will be distributed among the water trapped people of Habiganj.
