Chailar Char deserves more attention of govt to flourish

Chailar Char, an exceptional floating tourist center is being developed on 70 acres of land at Hetalbunia Mouza of Sadar Union at Kathalia Upazila in Jhalkathir district on the islet of Bishkhali River.

The entire char is submerged in the high tide water and the water recedes during the low- tide. Various species of birds such as ‘Shalik, Dahuk, Bok’ are making habitats and nests in this tourist spot that also attract tourists.

Moreover, during the winter, various species of guest birds are spotted in this char. Apart from mangroves, there are various species of trees such as Kaya, Hogal, Rana, Eli, Madar, Arguji.

The scientific name of the ‘Chaila’ tree is Eucalyptus (Latin: ‘Eucalyptus’), a genus of the Myrtaceous family. Although these trees are found on almost all continents including Asia and Australia due to its climatic adaptability.

Thise trees are found in the river beds of the southern region of Bangladesh. This trees play an effective role in preventing river erosion. For many years it was known only as ‘ Chaila ‘ Garden.

Since the road and river communication system has improved since 2015, Kathalia Upazila Nirbahi Officer ( UNO) Sufal Chandra Goldar took initiative to develop this tourist spot . Several resthouses and other facilities have been developed and various native species of trees are being planted through his dedicated efforts. Moreover, a lake has been created here which is named ‘DC Lake’.

UNO Mr. Sufal Chandra Goldar said, electricity has been arranged for tourists in this remote area from the Power Development Board ( PDB) and Palli Biddhut Samity ( PBS) and new roads are being constructed.

He also said that if the security and more facilities for tourists are created , it will develop as a unique tourist center and the Government will get a huge amount of revenue from here.

On Friday (July 15), Hemayet Hossain, Editor, The Country Today (dailycountrytodaybd.com), a national English daily and specialized news portal businessnews24bd.com led a group of journalist to explore the potentials of Chailar Char.

Kathalia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sufal Chandra Goldar, Betagi Press Club President Salam Siddiqui, General Secretary Mohsin Khan, Vice President Shamim Shikder, former President Saidul Islam Montu, Member Lecturer Abul Basar Khan and journalist Arif Sujan were present at this time and Abdul Halim, President of Citizens for Good Governance (SUJAN), Kathalia Unit and the daily Ittefaq Correspondent and Faruq Khan, Senior Vice President of Kathalia Press Club and Samakal Correspondent were present on the occasion.

The journalists discussed with UNO about the various issues of this exceptional and potential tourist centre .

It may be noted that with the dedicated efforts of UNO Sufal Chandra with the support of Barishal Divisional Commissiiner and Jhalakathi Deputy Commmissioner ( DC) it is being developed as a tourist center and various plans have been taken to facilitate increasing tourists.
