Cumilla City Corporation polls campaign ends : Candidates blame eachothers

Zakir Azad, Cumilla

The election campaign of Cumilla City Corporation has ended. On the last day, the candidate of boat complained that black money was being spread in the election and both the independent candidates complained that the Awami League candidate was planning to create chaos in front of the polling station by bringing outsiders.

On the same day, Awami League candidate Arfanul Haque Rifat told reporters at his election office on the banks of Rani’s Dighi in the morning that there was no question of me blocking them and ruining the election environment. We want peaceful elections in Cumilla. Whoever is elected, I will welcome him and the team. Claiming that black money is being spread at this time, he said, “My opposition candidate against whom I have brought allegations of corruption is spreading black money.” Even trying to pay my employees.

Former mayor of Cumilla City Corporation Monirul Haque Sakku spoke to leaders and activists at his residence all day on Monday. He told reporters at his residence in the morning that there was no level playing field and even the Member of Parliament did not accept the letter. The city is surrounded by the Union Parishad, and all its chairmen are Bahar Bhai’s men. He is telling them to bring people from the union on election day and create panic in the streets so that voters do not go to the center.

Meanwhile, independent candidate Nizamuddin Kaiser, who had chosen the horse symbol, went to the returning officer’s office at 12 noon on Monday. He complained that the presence of outsiders at this time is increasing fear and panic among the voters. Later, while talking to reporters, he said, “We have created fear among the voters of Cumilla city, that is external.”

The ruling party candidate is being recruited by bringing in outsiders for him. He told reporters at the time, “We, the people of Cumilla , had hoped for so long in the helplessness shown by the Hon’ble Chief Election Commissioner towards the local MPs.” Now we are a little disappointed. Because his helplessness means the helplessness of the administration, the helplessness of the Election Commission.

Voters not interested in mock voting:

Mock voting was organized to give voters an idea of the voting process ahead of the June 15 elections. Mock voting was organized on Monday to teach EVM voting rules at each center. However, most of the polling stations in the city did not show much voter turnout. At noon, when I went to the Victoria College Center in Kandirpar, I did not see many voters.

Incidentally, 5 mayoral candidates are contesting in Cumilla City Corporation elections. Out of 28 wards, there are 36 reserved councilor candidates and 107 in general wards. There are 2 lakh 29 thousand 920 voters. Of which 1 lakh 12 thousand 728 are male, 1 lakh 18 thousand 92 are female and 2 are third gender voters. There are 640 booths in 105 polling centers .
